Biographical Sketch
Dr. Brian Meier is the Director of the Analytic and Translational Research in Behavioral, Social, and Public Health Program in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Research Branch of NIDCR. This program focuses on the psychological, biopsychosocial, social, and environmental factors associated with DOC and overall health and well-being. Example projects include (but are not limited to):
- The collection of new data or the analyses of existing datasets, combined datasets, or big data to inform health practices, speed interventions, develop new measures, or develop novel research hypotheses
- The examination of individual differences (e.g., demographic variables or personality traits) and/or social psychological variables (e.g., group dynamics or social norms) to uncover novel predictors
- The application of basic research findings on decision biases to overcome behavioral choices that may impede optimal DOC health and well-being
- Translating basic behavioral health research findings to cost-effective interventions
- The translation of model animal findings to human-subject contexts
Dr. Meier obtained a Ph.D. in social and health psychology from North Dakota State University. Prior to joining NIDCR, Dr. Meier was a Professor of Psychology at Gettysburg College for approximately 20 years. He taught courses in general psychology, social psychology, statistics, and health psychology.
Dr. Meier’s extramural research, grants, and publications focused on health behavior, religion, mindfulness, social cognition, and decision biases such as the naturalness bias. His background includes knowledge in experimental designs, individual differences, social psychology, behavioral studies, and cross disciplinary research.
