Symposium Series | Showcasing NIDCR Extramural Research: 75 Years of Excellence

March 13 - 15, 2024
2024 General Session of the IADR/AADOCR/CADR, Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Room 294, New Orleans, LA.

Event Description

This symposium series was part of NIDCR’s yearlong 75th anniversary celebration and highlighted research conducted by NIDCR-funded institutions.

Speakers included those from different career stages, underrepresented groups in research, international sites, and those whose work is conducted at institutions outside of dental schools.

NIDCR75: Dental Caries – Understanding Microbial Ecology and Caries Management

Date and time: March 13, 2024 |10:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. CT

Speakers presented topics from a basic science perspective on the etiology, prevention, and management of dental caries.

NIDCR75: Dental Caries – Connecting Health Disparities to Interventions

Date and time: March 13, 2024 | 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. CT 

This session covered dental caries from an oral health disparities perspective to highlight multilevel influences on dental caries and promising strategies to address caries risk and barriers for accessing evidence-based interventions.

NIDCR75: Understanding Sjögren’s Disease – From SICCA to AMP-AIM/STAMP

Date and time: March 13, 2024 | 3:15 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. CT 

Speakers discussed how interprofessional collaborations within SICCA, STAMP, and other efforts are contributing to improved understanding of Sjögren’s disease and development of therapies.

NIDCR75: Facilitating Multimodal Data-Driven Translational Research via FaceBase

Date and time: March 14, 2024 | 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. CT

This event focused on NIDCR’s FaceBase, a repository of craniofacial data readily available to all scientists. Presenters discussed how data integration coupled with computational methods can drive discovery in dental, oral, and craniofacial research.

This event featured success stories in the product development journey from projects/small businesses that used various NIDCR funding mechanisms.

NIDCR75: Periodontal Disease – From Microbes to Hosts to Exposomes

Date and time: March 15, 2024 | 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. CT

The symposium reviewed the up-to-date evidence on the etiology, diagnosis, and management of periodontal diseases through a lens of clinical, translational, and foundational science.

NIDCR75: Catalyzing Excellence in Cancer Research: Moonshot, SPORE, and AHEAD

Date and time: March 15, 2024 | 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. CT

Presentations focused on a variety of topics, including what drives initiation of head and neck cancers; strategies to overcome treatment resistance; and emerging technologies for early detection, machine-learning-assisted single-cell data analysis, and cancer vaccine development.
