Biographical Sketch
Dr. Brian Meier is the Director of the Analytic and Translational Research in Behavioral, Social, and Public Health Program within the Behavioral and Social Sciences Research Branch of NIDCR. This program focuses on advancing dental, oral, and craniofacial discoveries across disciplines in the context of comprehensive health. Example project areas could include, but are not limited to:
- The translation of model animal findings to human-subject contexts.
- The analyses of existing datasets, combined datasets, or big data to inform health practices, speed interventions, develop new measures, or develop novel research hypotheses.
- The translation of basic health-related research on individual differences or differences between humans to dental, oral, and craniofacial health domains.
- The application of basic research findings on decision biases to overcome behavioral choices that may impede optimal dental, oral, and craniofacial health.
- Translating basic behavioral health research findings to cost-effective interventions.
Dr. Meier holds a Ph.D. in social and health psychology from North Dakota State University. He comes to NIDCR from Gettysburg College where he was a Professor of Psychology for approximately 20 years. He taught courses in general psychology, social psychology, statistics, and health psychology.
Dr. Meier’s extramural research, grants, and publications focus on health behavior, religion, mindfulness, social cognition, and behavioral decision biases such as the naturalness bias. His background includes knowledge in experimental designs, individual differences, behavioral studies, and cross disciplinary research.
