Special Emphasis Panel

Legislative Authority

The Panel is governed by the provisions of Public Law 92-463, as amended (5 U.S. Code Appendix 2), which sets forth standards for the formation and use of advisory committees.

Purpose

The NIDCR Special Emphasis Panel (SEP) provides concept review of proposed contract or grant solicitations and reviews grant and cooperative agreement applications. Additionally, the committee reviews contract proposals for research projects and for research and training activities in broad areas of science related to orofacial diseases and conditions.

Function

The SEP advises the NIH Director and NIDCR Director regarding concept review, research grant and cooperative agreement applications and contract proposals, relating to the cause, diagnosis, and treatment of oral-dental-craniofacial diseases and conditions.

Membership

Members and Chairs are selected on an "as needed" basis in response to specific applications, proposals or proposed solicitations to be reviewed. Approximately 270 reviewers are used each year. Members are selected from outstanding authorities in the various fields of biomedical research.

Members of the NIH Reviewers Reserve or chartered HHS advisory committees may serve on the Panel if their expertise is required.
